New Research

Clinicians spend over 50% of their time on clinical documentation

Few would challenge the view that accuracy and completeness of clinical documentation is essential for integrated, effective, efficient and safe delivery of care but until today there has been little research which extends through the patient and process factors to point to the wider economic implications for health trusts.

New research, commissioned by Nuance and carried out by independent research company Ignetica, provides insight for acute providers in England at a time when many are on the cusp of making significant technology investments in electronic patient records (EPRs) and other e-health initiatives.

The research identifies and measures the extent of the impacts on clinician, patient and trust economics including:

50%
of a doctor´s time spent on clinical documentation processes
3
wasted outpatient clinics per doctor per week
£20,000
doctor per year in time/value spent searching for information

Data & information flow across patient care pathways
Doctor and nurse productivity to free up time for their patients
Trust-wide economics and hospital performance

“The research has been designed to extend through the patient and process factors related to clinical documentation and to point to the wider economic implications for acute trusts in England at a time when decisions made now about clinical documentation workflows will have implications for the quality of patient care and treatment in the future.”
